Maine Coons ~ one of the Oldest and the Largest Domestic Cat Breeds in North America!

You’ve seen these gorgeous felines with the amazingly tall ears and lynx-like tufted tips; the large chin and muzzle; the piercingly beautiful eyes; the thick, long fur and that wild look that makes you wonder for a minute if these big cats are safe! (They are!)

Did you know a Maine Coon held the Guinness World Record for the World’s Longest Domestic Cat at almost 49 inches; was the first pet to be commercially cloned in 2004; loves the water, is affectionate and loyal and has a wonderfully sweet temperament? Did you also know they are sometimes polydactyl (extra toes) and that it is not uncommon for some males to reach 18 lbs. by a year old (able to stand and peer into the bathroom sink)?

It is believed by many that the first Maine Coons may have been brought to America by European sailors or even Vikings who docked in New England during the 1700’s. Genetic testing indicates that Maine Coons are descendents of the Norwegian Forest Cat as well a mysterious ancient breed which is now extinct.

Maine Coons are gorgeous animals with long luxurious coats that are also amazingly dense and water-repellant! Their large, tufted paws can double as snowshoes and stunning furry tails can wrap all the way around to add to their insulation during cold weather. Not only are they beautiful, but these amazing cats are also very social creatures with big hearts that will capture both your imagination and your spirit!
